Your First Visit to Queens Pain Clinic

Walking into a new doctor's office while you're in pain is rarely fun. You're sore, probably tired of explaining the same story, and maybe unsure what's about to happen. So here's how a first visit works at our Rego Park office, start to finish, so nothing catches you off guard.

We've been treating pain in Queens since 2004, and the first appointment is where it all starts. It's less about paperwork and more about listening to you.

Quick Answer

What should I bring to my first pain management appointment?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card(s), a list of your current medications with doses, any MRI, X-ray or CT images you already have, and a referral if your plan requires one. If your injury is covered by workers' compensation or no-fault auto insurance, bring the claim details as well. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early. The visit itself usually takes 45 to 60 minutes.

How your first visit works, step by step

Five steps from the first phone call to the start of treatment.

01

Call or book online

Our patient coordinators ask a few basic questions and check your insurance before you come in, so there are no surprises at the front desk. If the pain can't wait, ask about a same-day slot. Calling early in the morning gives you the best shot at one.

02

Fill out your forms at home

Download the new patient forms from our Online Forms page, fill them out, and either fax them in or bring them with you. It saves you a clipboard session in the waiting room, and it means your doctor has read your history before you sit down.

03

Pull your paperwork together

Photo ID, insurance cards, medication list, prior imaging, any referral. The full checklist is below. It takes ten minutes now and makes check-in much faster.

04

Your evaluation

This is the core of the visit. Your physician spends 45 to 60 minutes with you going over your medical history, asking about your pain in detail, examining you, and looking at your earlier scans and records. You'll leave knowing what we think is going on and what we recommend, not just holding a prescription.

05

Starting treatment

What happens next depends on your condition and on what your insurer needs to authorize. Some procedures can be scheduled for the same day. Others wait for a follow-up visit. Either way, our team handles the prior authorization paperwork, so you don't have to chase your insurance company.

Before you come in

It helps to think through a few things before you come in: when the pain started, where exactly you feel it, what makes it better or worse, and what you've already tried (medication, therapy, injections, surgery). Jot it down if that's easier. Details like these often matter more than people expect.

What to bring to your first visit

Having these ready helps your doctor see the whole picture on day one.

Government-issued photo ID
Driver's license, passport, or state ID
Insurance card(s)
Primary and secondary, if you have both
Current medication list
Include doses and the name of each prescribing doctor
Prior imaging
MRI, X-ray, or CT scans, on disc or printed
Referral letter
Needed for some HMO plans
Medical and surgical history
Earlier treatments, surgeries, hospital stays
Workers' comp or auto injury details
Claim or case number and the adjuster's contact info

What happens during the evaluation

Your doctor starts by talking with you. Expect questions about your symptoms, your daily routine, and how the pain affects sleep, work, and the things you like to do. Then comes a physical exam, focused on the area that hurts and the movements that set it off.

After that, your physician reviews your imaging and records and explains the findings in plain language. Together you decide on a plan. Depending on what's causing your pain, that plan can include options such as physical therapy, injections, or other minimally invasive treatments. Nothing is decided for you, and you're welcome to ask as many questions as you like.

Insurance and payment

We accept most major insurance plans. Coverage varies a lot from one policy to the next, so when you call to schedule, we'll look at your specific plan and give you an estimate of what it should cover.

PPO plans

No referral needed. You can see a specialist directly.

HMO plans

A referral from your primary care doctor is required.

Workers' compensation

Accepted. Bring your claim information to the first visit.

No-fault auto injury

Accepted. Bring your case number and adjuster details.

Medicare

Accepted for qualifying pain management services.

Medicaid

Please call us to confirm current participation.

For any out-of-pocket costs, we take cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Payment is due at the time of service.

Same-day appointments

If your pain is urgent, we can often see you the same day. Call the office first thing in the morning and ask. Slots depend on the schedule, so earlier is better.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers for new patients.

How long does a first pain management appointment take?

The first visit usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. That covers your history, a physical exam, a review of your imaging and records, and a conversation about your treatment plan. Plan on arriving 15 to 20 minutes early for check-in.

Do I need a referral to see a pain specialist in Queens?

It depends on your insurance. PPO plans generally let you see a specialist without a referral, while HMO plans usually require one from your primary care doctor. When you call, we'll check what your plan requires.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

Yes, for urgent pain conditions. Same-day evaluations are available, and the best time to ask is first thing in the morning, when we know what the day's schedule looks like.

Should I fill out the new patient forms ahead of time?

Yes, if you can. Forms are on our Online Forms page. Fax them to the office or bring them with you. Your doctor can read your history beforehand, which leaves more of the visit for you.

What should I tell the doctor about my medications?

Bring a written list of everything you take, including doses and who prescribed each one. Add over-the-counter drugs and supplements too. It helps your doctor avoid interactions and understand what you've already tried.

Do you take my insurance?

We accept most major plans, including PPO, HMO, and Medicare for qualifying services. We also see workers' compensation and no-fault auto injury patients. For Medicaid, call us to confirm current participation. We'll review your policy when you schedule.

Will you handle insurance authorizations?

Yes. If a treatment needs prior authorization, our team takes care of the paperwork with your insurer.

What if I have an auto accident or work injury claim?

We treat both. Bring your claim or case number and your adjuster's contact information to the first visit. That lets us set up billing correctly from day one.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Any out-of-pocket amount is due at the time of service.

Where is Queens Pain Clinic located?
