What Is Functional Medicine for Chronic Pain?
Most pain care starts with location. Where does it hurt, what does the imaging show, which medication or procedure fits. Functional medicine adds a second question: what is going on in this person's body that could be making the pain worse, or stopping it from settling down?
The answer is often something ordinary that nobody checked. An under-active thyroid, low vitamin D, a blood sugar problem or ongoing low-grade inflammation can each make pain feel stronger and slow healing. None of them show up on an MRI.
At Queens Pain Clinic, we look for those factors with lab testing, then address what we find through food, targeted supplements, sleep and stress work, and hormone support when your results justify it. The approach follows frameworks developed by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).
The approach follows frameworks developed by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), applied to pain that may have a biological component beyond the structural source.
It is not a replacement for an epidural injection or a nerve block when you need one. In our clinic it sits alongside them as one part of a larger plan.
What We Test
Your physician decides which panels make sense after reviewing your history. Nobody gets every test. These are the main areas we work with.
Inflammation
CRP, IL-6, TNF-α
Ongoing inflammation can make nerves more sensitive and slow tissue repair.
Hormones
Cortisol, thyroid, sex hormones, adrenal function
Imbalances can affect pain sensitivity, sleep, energy and recovery.
Metabolism
Blood sugar and insulin markers
Metabolic problems and chronic pain often show up together.
Nutrients
Vitamin D, B12, magnesium, iron
Shortfalls can contribute to muscle pain, fatigue and nerve symptoms.
Gut health
Microbiome analysis, intestinal permeability
For some patients, gut-driven inflammation is part of the picture.
Genetics
Specific gene variants
Can show how your body handles certain nutrients and inflammation.
Benefits of Functional Medicine
- Looks for the biological factors that may be keeping chronic pain going, such as inflammation, hormone imbalances, nutrient gaps and gut problems
- Checks for ordinary contributors that nobody tested, like an under-active thyroid, low vitamin D or a blood sugar problem, none of which show up on an MRI
- Tests more than 200 biomarkers, with panels chosen by your physician after reviewing your history
- Builds a plan from your results: nutrition changes, targeted supplements, and sleep and stress strategies
- Adds hormone support when your results justify it
- Repeats key labs at 6 and 12 weeks so we can see what is actually changing
- Adjusts the plan based on what moved and what did not
- Sits alongside epidural injections, nerve blocks and radiofrequency ablation as one part of a larger plan
- Calms the pain source with a procedure while correcting factors that may be working against your recovery
- May give your physician room to lower pain medication for some patients, always decided with your doctor
- Most useful when pain does not have a single clear structural cause, or when it has more than one
- The same physician team handles your interventional care, so your plan stays coordinated
Most people need 6 to 12 weeks before we can say how well the plan is working. Some changes come faster, others take longer, and results vary from person to person.
For some patients, improving the underlying picture gives their physician room to lower pain medication. That decision is always made with your doctor. Please do not stop or change a prescription on your own.
Our physicians also perform epidural injections, nerve blocks and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). When a structural problem and a body-wide problem are both present, treating only one leaves the other in place. The idea is to calm the pain source with a procedure while correcting the factors that may be working against your recovery.
Functional medicine tends to be most useful when pain does not have a single clear structural cause, or when it has more than one.
It will not fix every kind of pain. A herniated disc pressing on a nerve, for example, may need a procedure first. If that is the case, we will say so.
Intake visit
We go through your symptom timeline, past treatments, current medications, diet, sleep, stress and family history. This gives the lab results context.
Lab workup
We run testing across the areas above, usually more than 200 markers in total.
Your plan
Your physician builds a protocol from your results: nutrition changes, targeted supplements, hormone support if indicated, and sleep and stress strategies.
Retesting and adjustments
We repeat key labs at 6 and 12 weeks and change the plan based on what moved and what did not.

Your evaluation is led by our board-certified pain physicians. The same team handles your interventional care, so your plan stays coordinated. See our Providers page.
We see the strongest fit in pain with a systemic or metabolic component: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune-related pain, thyroid and hormonal pain disorders, and pain tied to nutritional deficiency. Pain from a clear mechanical cause may need a procedure first, with functional medicine added to support recovery.
